The 2009 contest was held in Russia (boo) with the semis being held on the 12th and 14th May 2009.

The final was, ironically, held the day before the International Day Against Homophobia (since renamed to add Bi and Transphobia) and on the day of the 2009 Moscow (Slavic) Pride where Peter Tatchell was famously arrested.

This was the last year that a jury was able to choose a wildcard to pass through the semis to the final.

Thirty seven countries took place in the two semi finals, with the following losers: Montenegro, Czech Republic, Belgium, Belarus, Andorra, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Ireland, Latvia, Serbia, Poland, Cyprus, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, and Netherlands.

It appears that Elvis was alive in 2009 and decided to sing for Belgium.

Another difficult year, but I think that the entry from Slovakia should have received a few more points to get through to the final. It wouldn't have won, but I do feel it deserved more of a chance. I will say that it was a close choice between this and the song by Netherlands.
