Motorway speed limit to be raised - Bad Idea?

The speed limit on Britain’s motorways is set to rise to 80mph

Is this a good idea or a bad one? Does raising the speed limit really make any difference to fuel efficiency?

Statistically speaking, all countries that have increased the speed limit have also increased the amount of road traffic accidents resulting in fatalities and those places that have reduced the speed limit have seen a decrease in accidents.

I'm really unsure on this one. To me, raising the speed limit may encourage even more speeding than we have already.

There are certain areas of Manchester where the streets are full of very dangerous drivers in a particularly expensive type of car speeding away while chatting on their mobiles. [I was going to name the types of car that I always see speeding, but I have held back in fear of recrimination!]
